It is also the best starting point for an Alishan trip—whether you’re planning to go hiking, explore the forest, or learn about Tsou culture, you can find all the information and support you need here.
Taiping Suspension Bridge
Taiping Suspension Bridge, located in Meishan Township, Chiayi, is the highest-altitude scenic suspension bridge in Taiwan. The bridge is about 281 meters long and stands more than 100 meters above the valley floor. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of seas of clouds, tea plantations, and layered mountain ridges, earning it the nickname “Sky Bridge Above the Clouds.”
The surrounding area has been developed with viewing platforms and walking trails that integrate the beauty of local tea fields and cultural features, making it one of Chiayi’s must-visit attractions. On sunny days, visitors can take in panoramic views of the mountain town, while on misty days, it feels like stepping into a fairyland — with each season offering its own distinct charm.
Guanyin Waterfall
The Guanyin Waterfall Scenic Area was closed for nearly 22 years due to cliff collapses and road damage caused by the 921 Earthquake and Typhoon Morakot. After extensive restoration by the Alishan National Scenic Area Administration and the Chiayi County Government, it has now reopened to the public.
The area features eight waterfalls plunging from mountain peaks, each forming a unique spectacle as it cascades into forested gorges. No strenuous climbing is required — visitors can easily enjoy the magnificent waterfalls and valleys, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely forest getaway!
Yuyupas Tsou Cultural Park
Yuyupas Tsou Cultural Park is located in Leye Village, Alishan Township, at an elevation of 1,300 meters. The name “Yuyupas” comes from the Tsou language and conveys a blessing of spiritual and material abundance and well-being.
Recognizing that local traditional economic activities were still largely low-yield agriculture, Chairman Cheng Yu-ping, together with a group of Tsou youth committed to promoting Tsou culture and revitalizing local industries, founded Yuyupas under the vision of “Building a Nest, Realizing Dreams.
Spanning three hectares, the park is surrounded by tea and coffee plantations, lush with flowers and butterflies. Visitors can join cultural guided tours, taste high-quality Alishan tea and coffee, enjoy authentic Alishan cuisine (with vegetarian and Muslim-friendly options), and experience world-class Tsou song-and-dance performances.
Fenqihu Old Street
Fenqihu Old Street, located halfway up Alishan in Chiayi, is one of the most welcoming towns along the Alishan Forest Railway. Its name “Fenqihu” comes from the surrounding terrain, enclosed by mountains on three sides and resembling a pond. In earlier times, it was an important hub for the forestry and railway industries. Today, despite the rise of tourism, the old street has retained its rich nostalgic charm.
A must-try in Fenqihu is the renowned “Fenqihu Lunchbox,” along with local specialties such as fragrant donuts, herbal rice cakes, and aiyu jelly. The street is flanked by rustic wooden houses, century-old shops, and small teahouses, evoking the nostalgic atmosphere of Japan’s Showa era.
Fenqihu also serves as a key stopover en route to Alishan, where visitors can rest, enjoy local flavors, and explore nearby cedar trails and hidden bamboo groves to appreciate the beauty of the mountains. Its leisurely atmosphere, distinctive railway heritage, and culinary delights make Fenqihu Old Street an unforgettable highlight of the Alishan journey.
Tsou Tribal Archery Cultural & Creative Park
The Tsou Tribal Archery Cultural & Creative Park focuses on promoting and sustaining the indigenous culture of the Zhulu Community. Visitors can learn about indigenous traditions and everyday life, join cultural guided tours, enjoy traditional song-and-dance performances, savor distinctive local cuisine, and take part in various DIY experiences.
The Zhulu Community was established after eight Tsou tribes relocated to the foothills of Alishan when their homes were destroyed by landslides during Typhoon Morakot. The land they settled on was once a historic sika deer hunting ground, revered by the Tsou people. To honor their ancestors and way of life, the community was named “Zhulu,” meaning “deer hunting.
Danaishe Valley
Danaishe Creek, part of the upper watershed of the Zengwen River, is home to abundant “Guhua” fish (locally known as 苦花). In the past, outsiders often poisoned or electro-fished here, threatening villagers’ drinking water and destroying the creek’s natural ecosystem. Later, under the leadership of former village chief Gao Zhengsheng, villagers collectively contributed their clan-owned fishing grounds to form the “Creek Conservation Association.”
The Gongxing Ecological Park, located at an elevation of 874 meters and covering 10.7 hectares, lies at the 47.5 km mark of the Alishan Highway (Route 18). The Alishan National Scenic Area Administration invested NT$130 million to create facilities for visitors to enjoy a slow-paced, relaxing trip. The park offers abundant natural ecology, verdant forest trails rich in phytoncides, and distinct seasonal scenery year-round. Owing to the fame of “Bandit Mountain,” the forest landscape has remained well preserved.
Er Yanping Trail
Er Yanping Trail, located in the Shizhao area of Alishan Township, Chiayi County, is one of the most popular hiking trails in the Alishan National Scenic Area. The trail is about 1.1 km long and takes roughly 30 minutes to walk one way. With its gentle slopes and easy path, it is suitable for families and general visitors.
Along the way, hikers can admire tea plantations, bamboo groves, and mountain ridges — iconic features of the Alishan tea region. From the viewing platforms, visitors can take in sweeping views of the Yushan Mountain Range and the Chianan Plain. On clear days, the trail offers stunning views of seas of clouds and glowing sunsets, and it is especially renowned for sunrise and cloud-watching.
